xanthochromia /zan′thəkrō′mē·ə/ , a pale yellow or straw-colored discoloration of cerebrospinal fluid. It is caused by the presence of hemoglobin breakdown products, indicating that the cerebrospinal fluid has contained blood in the recent past.
