wood creosote

wood creosote, a substance obtained by distilling wood tar, mainly beech (Fagus sylvatica). It is a colorless to yellowish, oily, refractive liquid composed mainly of the phenol derivatives guaiacol and creosol. It was formerly used as an expectorant and external antiseptic but is now rarely used in the United States.
