vegetative endocarditis [L, vegetare, to grow; Gk, endon, within, kardia, heart, itis, inflammation] , a subacute form of bacterial endocarditis characterized by vegetation on the heart valves. The vegetation may cause ulceration and perforation of the heart valve cusps.
