unequal cleavage /unē″kwəl/ [ME, un + L, aequare, to make equal; AS, cleofan, to split] , mitotic division of a fertilized ovum into blastomeres that are larger near the yolky part of the cell (the vegetal pole) and smaller near the nucleus (the animal pole). Compare equal cleavage.
