toluene (C6H5CH3) /tol″yo̅o̅·ēn/ , an aromatic, colorless, flammable liquid produced from coal tar, petroleum, or Peruvian tolu balsam. It is used in dyes, explosives, gums, and lacquers and in the manufacture of drugs and the extraction of organic chemicals from plants.
