thyroxine (T4)

thyroxine (T₄) /thīrok′sēn/ , a hormone of the thyroid gland, derived from tyrosine and deiodinated in the periphery to T₃ (triiodothyronine). Thyroxine stimulates metabolic rate. Also called tetraiodothyronine.
