teicoplanin /ti-ko-pla′nin/ , a glycopeptide antibiotic produced by the bacterium Actinoplanes teichomyceticus, used as a less toxic alternative to vancomycin in the treatment of moderate to severe infections caused by gram-positive bacteria when other antibiotics cannot be used.
