summons

summons /sum″əns/ [OFr, somondre, to remind secretly] , (in law) a document issued by a clerk of the court on the filing of a complaint. A sheriff, marshal, or other appointed person serves the summons, notifying a person that an action has been begun against him or her. See also service of process.
