strychnine

strychnine /strik″nin, strik″nīn/ [Gr, strychnos, nightshade] , a white crystalline alkaloid obtained from the leaves of the Strychnos nux-vomica plant. It is extremely toxic to the central nervous system and produces a classic strychnine poisoning symptom, an arched back (opisthotonos).
