short-bowel syndrome

short-bowel syndrome [AS, sceort + OFr, boel + Gk, syn, together, dromos, course] , a loss of intestinal surface for absorption of nutrients caused by the surgical removal of a section of bowel. Treatment is with parenteral nutrition in the acute phase.
