Shigella

Shigella /shigel″ə/ [Kiyoshi Shiga, Japanese bacteriologist, 1870–1957] , a genus of gram-negative pathogenic bacteria that causes gastroenteritis and bacterial dysentery, such as Shigella dysenteriae. It is also associated with hemolytic uremic syndromes. See also shigellosis.
