scotoma

scotoma /skōtō″mə/ pl. scotomas, scotomata [Gk, skotos, darkness, oma, tumor] , a defect of vision in a defined area of the visual field in one or both eyes. A common prodromal symptom is a shimmering film appearing as an island in the visual field.
