proctocolectomy

proctocolectomy /prok′tōkəlek″təmē/ , a surgical procedure in which the anus, rectum, and colon are removed. An ileostomy is created for the removal of digestive tract wastes. The procedure treats severe, intractable ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. See also ileoanal anastomosis.
