plaque

plaque /plak/ [Fr, plate] , 1. a flat, often raised patch on the skin or any other organ of the body. 2. a patch of atherosclerosis. 3. a usually thin film on the teeth. It is made up of mucin and colloidal material found in saliva and often secondarily invaded by bacteria. Also called bacterial plaque.
