permissive hypercapnia

permissive hypercapnia, ventilation that allows PaCO2 to rise slowly over time as the pH becomes normalized. The goal is to reduce tidal volume and rate while preventing volutrauma during mechanical ventilation. Patients may need to be sedated during this.
