Pascal’s principle

Pascal’s principle /poskuls′, paskals″/ [Blaise Pascal] , (in physics) a law stating that a confined liquid transmits pressure applied to it from an external source equally in all directions. Pascal’s principle provides the basis for all hydraulic devices.
