nonnutritive sweetener

nonnutritive sweetener /-no̅o̅″tritiv/ , a chemical additive such as saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame, or sucralose that gives a sweet taste to foods without contributing significant calories. The sugar substitute is either not metabolized or so intensely sweet that the calorie count is negligible.
