molecular mimicry

molecular mimicry, an occurrence in which sequence similarities between foreign (e.g., pathogens) and self-peptides are sufficient to result in the cross-activation of autoreactive T or B cells. Believed to play a role in the pathogenesis of diseases of the central nervous system and other autoimmune diseases. See also mimicry.
