methanol (CH3OH)

methanol (CH3OH) /meth″ənol/ , a clear, colorless, toxic liquid distillate of wood miscible with water, other alcohols, and ether. Methanol is produced industrially from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. It is widely used as a solvent and in the production of formaldehyde. Also called methyl alcohol, wood alcohol.
