Metchnikoff’s theory /mech″nikofs/ [Elie Metchnikoff, Russian-French biologist, 1845–1916; Gk, theoria, speculation] , the theory that living cells ingest microorganisms. The theory proved correct, as seen in the process of phagocytosis and the ingestion of injurious microbes by leukocytes.
