metarubricyte /-ro̅o̅″brisīt/ [Gk, meta + L, ruber, red, kytos, cell] , a red blood cell precursor, the last nucleated stage of red blood cell production. Metarubricytes are usually confined to the bone marrow but may appear in the peripheral blood in newborns and in uncompensated hemolytic anemia.
