median episiotomy

median episiotomy, an incision in the perineum in the midline. Although less painful after delivery, it affords less exposure for delivery and may extend into or through the anal sphincter and into the rectum. Also called midline episiotomy. Compare mediolateral episiotomy. See also episiotomy.
