mechanical dead airspace [Gk, mechane + AS, dead + Gk, aer + L, spatium] , the volume of air that fills the breathing circuits of a mechanical ventilator. The mechanical dead space may be increased if necessary to control hypocapnia and respiratory alkalosis.
