macroelement, a chemical element required in relatively large quantities for the normal physiological processes of the body. Macroelements include carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, potassium, sodium, calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, and sulfur. See also macronutrient.
