macrocytic anemia

macrocytic anemia, anemia characterized by impaired erythropoiesis and macrocytes on a peripheral blood film. Macrocytic anemia is seen in liver disease, alcoholism, megaloblastic anemia with folate or cobalamin deficiency, and in myelodysplastic syndromes. Compare microcytic anemia.
