luteinization /lo̅o̅′tē·in′īzā″shən/ [L, luteus, yellow] , the formation of the corpus luteum from an ovarian follicle that has recently discharged an ovum. The process involves the hypertrophy of the follicular lutein cells and the development of blood vessels and connective tissue at the site.
