lithotomy

lithotomy /lithot″əmē/ [Gk, lithos + temnein, to cut] , 1. the surgical excision of a calculus, especially one from the urinary tract. 2. a position in the operating room in which the patient is supine with legs raised and abducted to expose the perineal region. The legs are placed in stirrups to maintain the position.
