interleukin-6 (IL-6)

interleukin-6 (IL-6), a cytokine produced by T cells, macrophages, dendritic cells, and fibroblasts. It has both proinflammatory and antiinflammatory functions. It is an important mediator of fever and of the acute phase response. Also called beta2-interferon.
