hypertonic /hī′pərton″ik/ [Gk, hyper + tonos, stretching] , 1. adj., pertaining to a solution that causes cells to shrink. 2. n., a solution that increases the degree of osmotic pressure on a semipermeable membrane. Compare hypotonic, isotonic.
