hyaline membrane

hyaline membrane [Gk, hyalos, glass; L, membrana] , a fibrous covering of the alveolar membranes in infants, caused by a lack of pulmonary surfactant associated with prematurity and low-birth-weight delivery. See also respiratory distress syndrome of the newborn.
