hookworm

hookworm [AS, hok + wyrm] , (Nontechnical) a nematode of the genera Ancylostoma, Necator, or Uncinaria. Most hookworm infections in the western hemisphere are caused by the species Necator americanus. Infection occurs when the larvae invade exposed skin, mostly the feet. Individuals may be asymptomatic carriers.
