guardian ad litem

guardian ad litem /ad lī″təm/ [L, ad litem, to litigate] , (in law) a person who is appointed by a court to prosecute or defend a suit for an infant or an incapacitated person. A guardian ad litem is sometimes appointed when a person’s life is in imminent danger and that person refuses treatment.
