gliding zone

gliding zone, an articular cartilage surface area immediately adjacent to a joint space. It consists of a thin layer of densely packed collagen fibers lying parallel to the surface and covered by a fine acellular, afibrillar membrane. At the periphery the fibrous components merge with the fibrous periosteum of the adjacent bone.
