forced-inhalation abdominal breathing

forced-inhalation abdominal breathing, a respiratory therapy technique in which the patient inhales through the nose with an effort forceful enough to lift small sandbag weights placed on the abdomen. The technique is said to resemble closely the abdominal effort involved in normal breathing.
