fineness

fineness /fīn″nes/ [Fr, fin, thin] , a means of grading alloys in relation to their gold content. The fineness of an alloy is designated in parts per thousand of pure gold, which is 1000 fine. Gold alloys and pure gold may be used in dental restorations, such as tooth crowns and prepared tooth-cavity fillings. Compare karat.
