exteroceptor /ek′stərōsep″tər/ [L, externus, outside, recipere, to receive] , any sensory nerve ending, such as those located in the skin, mucous membranes, or sense organs, that responds to stimuli originating outside the body, such as touch, pressure, or sound. Compare interoceptor, proprioceptor. See also chemoreceptor.
