expiration /ik′spirā″shən/ [L, expirare, to breathe out] , 1. breathing out, normally a passive process, depending on the elastic qualities of lung tissue and the thorax. Also called exhalation. Compare inspiration. −expiratory, adj. 2. the end of a predefined period. 3. termination or death.
