escape rhythm

escape rhythm [OFr, escaper + Gk, rhythmos, beat] , a sustained heartbeat that occurs when the sinus or atrioventricular (AV) node is depressed or blocked. Under such conditions, the heart rate is controlled by the AV junction or the His-Purkinje system.
