erythema /er′ithē″mə/ [Gk, erythros, red] , redness or inflammation of the skin or mucous membranes that is the result of dilation and congestion of superficial capillaries. Examples of erythema are nervous blushes and mild sunburn. See also erythroderma, rubor. −erythematous, adj.
