dysmelia

dysmelia /dismē″lyə/ [Gk, dys + melos, limb] , an abnormal congenital condition characterized by missing or shortened extremities of the body associated with abnormalities of the spine in some individuals. It is caused by abnormal metabolism during the embryonic development of the limbs. See also phocomelia.
