cutdown

cutdown [ME, cutten + doun] , (Informal) a dissection to access a vein for puncture that is not accessible by venipuncture. The skin is cleansed before the procedure; the incision is sutured, and a sterile dressing is applied at its conclusion. See also hyperalimentation, venipuncture.
