crepitant crackle

crepitant crackle [L, crepitans, crackling] , an abnormal breathing sound produced at the end of inspiration and caused by air entering collapsed alveoli or just collapsed alveoli and atelectasis that contain fibrous exudate. It occurs in pneumonia, tuberculosis, and pulmonary edema.
