cortical rim sign, in computed tomography of the kidney, a thin rim of peripheral cortex that is perfused and visible when other parts of the cortex are not because of capsular collateral arteries. It indicates cortical necrosis, renal vein thrombosis, or infarction of the nonperfused parts. Also called rim sign.
