contact allergy

contact allergy, hypersensitivity to a substance that produced a reaction in a previous contact or that is structurally similar to another substance that produced such a reaction. Substances that can cause a contact allergy include poison ivy, metals, detergents, cosmetics, foods, and topical medicines.
