cetyl alcohol (C₁₆H₃₃OH) /sē″til/ [L, cetus, whale; Ar, alkohl, essence] , a fatty alcohol derived from spermaceti, used as an emulsifier and stiffening agent in creams and ointments. Also called hexadecanol, palmityl alcohol.
