cardioplegia /-plē″jə/ [Gk, kardia + plege, stroke] , 1. paralysis of the heart. 2. the arrest of myocardial contractions by hypothermia, electrical stimuli, or injection of chemicals for the purpose of performing surgery on the heart. See also cardiac standstill.
