carbonic anhydrase

carbonic anhydrase /anhī″drās/ , a zinc-containing enzyme in red blood cells that assists in the hydration of carbon dioxide to carbonic acid in the red blood cell so that it can be transported from the tissue cell to the lungs. Also called carbonate dehydratase.
