barium swallow

barium swallow [Gk, barys, heavy; AS, swelgan, to swallow] , a medical imaging procedure in which a radiopaque barium sulfate suspension is administered orally and is used to examine the upper GI (gastrointestinal) tract. Also called esophagography. See also barium meal.
