apneustic breathing

apneustic breathing /apno̅o̅″stik/ [Gk, a, pneusis, not breathing] , a pattern of breathing characterized by a prolonged inspiratory phase followed by expiration apnea. The rate of apneustic breathing is usually around 1.5 breaths per minute. This breathing pattern is often associated with head injury.
