concentric contraction

concentric contraction, a muscle contraction that occurs when the muscle fibers shorten as tension develops. A concentric contraction of the biceps brachii occurs, for example, when an elbow is bent or flexed to raise a hand to the mouth. Compare eccentric contraction. See also isotonic exercise.
